for understanding words of insight;
for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life,
doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline. - Proverbs 1:2-7 NIV
For all the knowledge and information that is available today, everything that science and technology has provided, we are still lacking wisdom. Our lives could not be described as being disciplined or prudent. In fact they are anything but. We may thing we are sophisticated, but we are really a very simple lot. We mimic what we see. We accept what the media and technology throw at us as truth and reality. We think we are so wise, but we are only fools and although we would be loath to admit it, our lives demonstrate that we despise wisdom and discipline.
Only lives led in holy fear of the Lord God, the creator or the earth and sea, have any hope of attaining wisdom. That's it. Without him, without lives led in reverence, awe and even abandonment to him, we have no wisdom, we have no knowledge. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
