your love, O LORD, endures forever—
do not abandon the works of your hands. -Ps. 138:8 NIV
Everyone wants to live a fulfilling life. Many think it is owed them. But in the final outcome, it is not whether or not we lead fulfilled lives, but whether or not God's fulfills his purpose for us. And that is a matter of the heart, not our abilities. God is always willing to fulfill his purpose for us, but for many of us, that is the last thing we want. So we lead lives on our own terms that seldom resemble what we could have been, that fall short of the promise with which we started.
It's difficult to submit to become clay in the potters hand, but that's the only way we develop any worth at all. To measure our worth by the world's standards, we sell ourselves short and become relegated to the dustbin with the other shards of pottery that refused to be molded.
